Prevention of Kidney Stones
The following recommendations will help you lower the chance of making more stones in the future:
1. Drink more fluids so that the colour of your urine is as light yellow as possible. I recommend drinking water, lemonade or orange juice, but not necessarily cranberry juice. In addition, you should try to void about 6 times in the daytime.
2. Calcium in your diet or calcium pills will not usually increase your risk of kidney stones.
3. Calcium oxalate kidney stones are the most common stones so moderate the amount of food that has high oxalate content such as:
- Draft beer
- Berries and juices containing berries
- Tea, except for herbal tea
- Chocolate/ cocoa
- Nuts: pecans, peanuts, almonds
- Tofu and soybean curd
- Spinach, beet, eggplant, parsley, sweet potatoes, green peppers, green beans, black olives, quinoa
4. Reduce the amount of salt in your diet, including soy sauce.
5. Reduce the amount of animal protein in your diet (meat, poultry, fish), especially important if you make uric acid stones.
6. Be involved in regular physical exercise.
7. Depending on the type of stone you make, certain medications may help.
